In der Schule interessierte er sich besonders f\u00fcr Mechanik, vor allem f\u00fcr W\u00e4rmekraft- und Dampfmaschinen. 1872 lieh er sich Geld von Freunden, um eine \u201cBenzzer Eisengie\u00dferei und Maschinenfabrik\u201d zu gr\u00fcnden. Aufgrund der Wirtschaftskrise musste die Fabrik nach f\u00fcnf Jahren schlie\u00dfen. Gezwungen, sich der Entwicklung des gro\u00dfen Potenzials der Motorenfertigung zuzuwenden, gelang es ihm schlie\u00dflich am 31. Dezember 1879, einen Einzylinder-Zweitaktmotor herzustellen. Damals kannte man Motoren f\u00fcr Kraftfahrzeuge und Motorr\u00e4der noch nicht, daher kaufte niemand gezielt seine Motoren. Er verbrachte die schwierigste Zeit damit, von der Mitgift seiner Frau zu leben.<\/p>\n<p>1882 gelang es ihm schlie\u00dflich, die Unterst\u00fctzung eines Gesch\u00e4ftsmanns und eines Bankiers zu gewinnen. Gemeinsam gr\u00fcndeten sie die Mannheimer Gasmotorenfabrik. Aufgrund der Einschr\u00e4nkungen der Investoren konnte er jedoch nicht so arbeiten, wie er es sich gew\u00fcnscht h\u00e4tte, und verlie\u00df das Unternehmen bald darauf ver\u00e4rgert. Ihm wurde klar, dass ein Motor nur dann marktf\u00e4hig war, wenn er praktisch eingesetzt werden konnte. Daher baute er den Gasmotor zu einem Benzinmotor um und montierte ihn an ein Dreirad. So schuf er 1885 das erste Auto der Welt!
